WHAT IS THE "NEW REGIONAL BAUHAUS"?

The New Regional Bauhaus ("NRB") in Heerlen (NL) is a cooperation project between the Chair of Urban Design and Institute for Urban Design and European Urbanism, the UNESCO Chair of Cultural Heritage and Urbanism (both at RWTH Aachen University), the municipality of Heerlen, the Province Limburg and Stadsregio Parkstad Limburg. NRB takes place in the city of Heerlen, in a new "dependance" for students, teachers and researchers – as an important symbol of neighborly cooperation. The building situated in the city center served as the venue for the "International Building Exhibition (IBA) Parkstad Limburg" in the last decade. The site will now become a local, regional and international contact point to discuss topics such as built heritage, sustainability and inclusion (based on the EU initiative New European Bauhaus). The location in Heerlen underlines the idea that regional thinking transcends municipal, provincial and national borders while still taking the local context into account. The idea of the New Regional Bauhaus was established as a central key project by the →Spatial Strategy Zuid Limburg.
The "New Regional Bauhaus" acts as a forum for cross-border and interdisciplinary teaching, research and transfer. It aims to highlight the importance of regional planning, particularly in tackling the global challenges of sustainability and inclusion. Another key aspect is the focus on regional spatial quality.
